Summary of Credit Card Penalty Fees (Regulation Z) Final Rule

This tool summarizes the CFPB’s Final Rule amending Regulation Z to modify the limits on credit card penalty fees:

  1. The safe harbor for late fees is limited to $8 for all but Smaller Card Issuers;
  2. For other violations, the safe harbor will be capped at $32 for the first violation and $43 for subsequent violations;
  3. Smaller Card Issuers may use the same penalty fees for late fees as for other violations.
