Effective Date: Trump Accounts

AGENCY:

Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury.

ACTION:

Temporary regulations.

SUMMARY:

These temporary regulations issued by the IRS outlines that Trump accounts are designed for eligible individuals under age 18 and generally operate as a specialized form of traditional IRA during a defined “growth period.” The temporary regulation provides detailed requirements for account establishment, trustee responsibilities, account administration, contributions, investments, reporting expectations, and the process for automatic enrollment by the Treasury. The temporary regulations also permit the Treasury Department to automatically establish initial accounts for eligible children and outline procedures for account ownership, rollovers, beneficiary claims, and qualified contributions. They further provide that existing IRS-approved nonbank IRA trustees are automatically eligible to act as Trump Account trustees and require accounts to be clearly designated and administered in accordance with the specialized restrictions applicable during the growth period. Banks should note the limitations on contributions, distributions, and permitted investments, as well as future reporting obligations that Treasury and the IRS indicate will be addressed through additional guidance.

DATES:

Effective date: These temporary regulations are effective on September 30, 2026.
